Up for sale is this view of the city of Jerusalem, a reproduction of British artist David Robert’s monumental series … more Up for sale is this view of the city of Jerusalem, a reproduction of British artist David Robert’s monumental series of views of ancient sites in current day Israel, Egypt, and other parts of the Middle East, published as lithographs by the artist-traveler in 41 parts in “The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Egypt, & Nubia” between 1842 and 1849. It is one of two views we are currently selling. The vantage point is far outside the city where, in the foreground, we get a glimpse of local life. It’s wash day, and a group of men dressed in robes and turbans and other traditional Arab garb have gathered near a half-submerged ancient stone pillar and a resting camel. Some consider this to be the most atmospheric of the popular full folio panoramas of Jerusalem, with dramatic light and shadows. Roberts dated the sketch April 1839. This gorgeous print is in excellent condition and appropriately showcased with a double mat in an ornate gold and distressed black wood frame with an overall size of 24″ x 31″. There is minor scuffing to the frame, but the print and mats are immaculate. . less
