Up for sale is this framed reproduction of a lithograph after one of David Robert’s views of Jerusalem, one of … more Up for sale is this framed reproduction of a lithograph after one of David Robert’s views of Jerusalem, one of two Roberts views we are currently offering. The original lithographs were published by the artist-traveler in 41 parts in “The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Egypt, & Nubia” between 1842 and 1849. Although this view is titled “Church of the Purification”, archaeological evidence suggests that the Church of the Purification is, in fact, not represented in this westward view of the Jerusalem landscape. Instead, we, and the figures in the foreground, see the silver-domed Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in Islam, the famous Wailing Wall, and the renowned gold-domed Islamic shrine, Dome of the Rock. Roberts also offers a distant view of Temple Mount, one of the most important religious sites in Jerusalem, held sacred by Christianity and Judaism as well as Islam. In the foreground, a woman and a group of men dressed in robes and turbans and other traditional Arab garb rest on a half-buried ancient stone structure, giving a sense of scale to the sweeping view as well as a flavor of the local culture. Roberts dated the sketch April 9th, 1839. This gorgeous print is in excellent condition and appropriately showcased with a double mat in an ornate gold and distressed black wood frame with an overall size of 24″ x 31″. There is minor scuffing to the frame, but the print and mats are immaculate. . less
