Mahogany once grew so abundantlythat woodcutters sawed out only the most ornamental part of the tree, leavingthe rest to decay. By the 1800s countrysidesdominated by fields of sugar cane and dotted with the ragged stumps ofmahogany trees, many over nine feet tall and that this most important raw materialneared extinction on a growing list of West Indian islands. less
